Easter Island (117 sq km) is one of the most isolated place on earth. 
Locally know as Rapa Nui the local population numbers 3000 plus hundreds 
of moai - the world famous stone statues.

The harbour in main village Hanga Roa where most people live. Ahu Akahanga - the moai have been pushed over during tribal wars. The whole island is of volcanic remains and is pounded by fierce waves.

The Rano Kau volcanic crater. The low stone house of the Orongo Ceremonial Village were used during the bizarre rituals of the "bird cult" in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Rano Raraku crater. This volcano was where the moai was cut from the porous gray rock.

The moa were carved from the rock as if lying on their backs. Some are unfinished and seem to be sleeping 
in their niches.
Linzi says hello. Groups of moai are partly buried in the grassy slopes of the volcano. Erected here to be finished off before being moved to their Ahu on another part 
of the island.

Ahu Tongariki. In 1960 a tsunami demolished several moai.  Ahu Tongariki. A Japanese project in the 1990's restored the 15 moai atop their Ahu.  Ahu Nau Nau in the north of the island with their inlaid coral and rock eyes 'looking to the skies.'

Rapa Nui is a rugged, sparse but very beautiful Island. 
Rano Raraku is a truly evocative place.
